∂AIL Mr. Walter Sheldon↓440 East 62nd Street↓New York, N.Y. 10021∞
Dear Mr. Sheldon:
I am aware through reading that bribery is routine in many
Far Eastern countries. I also approve of Mr. Schanberg's efforts
to save his friend. However, the bribery he refers to was not in
behalf of that; it was merely to get a story that was no doubt like
many other stories he filed.
I think that his bribing Cambodian soldiers contributed in
a small way to the Communist victory that led to the deaths of
millions, and I think it is self-serving of Americans who contributed
to the Communist victory to deny their part of the responsibility
for its consequences. I am aware of the argument that the Khmer
Rouge victory is the fault of Nixon and Kissinger. I believe it
was invented by Anthony Lewis of the %2New York Times%1 in whose
column I first read it. No doubt it can be argued, but coming from
him it seems entirely self-serving.
Your expression of prejudice against people who work with
computers is as reprehensible as any other expression of prejudice.
I grant, however, the sincerity of your emotion of indignation
at my criticism of Mr. Schanberg, and I am sorry that you don't seem
to grant the sincerity of my human emotion of indignation of Mr.
Schanberg not realizing that his own actions contributed to the
Cambodian disaster.
